Indulge in the Nordic Spirits During the Fourth Annual Aquavit Week, Dec. 6-12

The Annual Aquavit Week kicks off Sunday, December 6, in Portland. Though this Nordic spirit is often underrated, Portland has embraced it in a big way, with restaurants such as Broder and Broder Nord dedicated to it; our own distilleries, such as House Spirits, developing their own brands; and this week-long event, founded by author/bartender Jacob Grier, celebrating it.

Aquavit is often compared to gin. Flavored with caraway and other botanicals, it’s as varied a spirit as any other, and is delicious both in cocktails or served chilled, and is often taken as shots and served alongside beers. Different countries and distilleries have their own takes on it, some barrel aged, others not.

The week has a number of events, and sees the celebration expanding to Seattle. The kick-off party is hosted by Broder Nord with guest speaker Christer Olsen, of the sponsoring Aquavit label Linie.

The rest of the week has multiple bars participating with original drinks and aquavit flights, including Bit House Saloon, Raven & Rose, Multnomah Whiskey Library (where Grier also tends bar), Hop and Vine, Expatriate, Rum Club, La Moule, and many more. Things wrap up on Saturday, December 12, with a cocktail collaboration closing party at La Moule.
