Oyamel Celebrates Frida Kahlo With Special Cocktails & Dinner Menu, July 6-13

“Come ready to eat every kind of food, let your hair down and sing your heart out.” Such was the welcome Frida Kahlo offered to guests, who joined her on July 6, 1942 for a birthday dinner she cooked for herself. Inspired by that meal,  José Andrés and the team at Oyamel have created a special menu, to honor the pioneering Mexican artist.

Offered each night through July 13, the unique options include three cocktails ($12 each). The Frida blends El Tesoro Blanco, blackberries, cucumber, black pepper and Valle de Guadelupe Cabernet for a sip as powerful as the woman herself. There’s also the floral Dreams of Coyacan (Herradura Blanco, Fidencio mezcal, green apple and celery juice, lemon, green chartreuse and orchids) and one of the more interesting margaritas around, made with house cucumber tequila, elderflower, lime and sparkling Champalou Vouvray.

On the food side, look for caldo de camarone, a shrimp broth with tomatoes, onions and gulf prawns; pulled pork and chorizo tacos; confit of rabbit legs with a fruit and chile mole; and grilled center cut pork chop with pumpkin seed pipian and pickled cactus ($4–$12). The specials are offered all week, except for July 9, when the restaurant will be closed.
