6 Great Liquor Stores in Baltimore

It’s no secret that Baltimore abounds with liquor stores; there are at least 245 of them within the city limits (according to Research USA, 2010). Over the years, dozens of “Best Liquor Stores” lists have been compiled, but few address how you like to shop and interact. Do you place a liquor order on a regular basis and want delivery, or do you more often stop by a neighborhood shop and visit with the proprietor about the perfect bottle of wine to have with dinner? Whether you prefer a superstore or specialty shop, we have you covered. Here are six of our favorites.

Superstores:

The Wine Source – Always near the top of any compilation, The Wine Source is stocked with every imaginable beer and spirit. Known for regular in-store wine, cheese, and liquor tastings, the staff is as friendly and knowledgeable as they come. Their wine buyer, Ian Stalfort, travels the world and brings back the best from the vines. Citywide delivery is offered (3601 Elm Ave.; 410-467-7777).

Wells Discount Liquors – Another perennial Baltimore favorite (since 1937!), Well’s stocks alcoholic beverages from every continent except Antarctica. Visit their website for their monthly wine and liquor sales sheets – they define discount. The online ordering system is fast and efficient, and they deliver throughout the city (6310 York Rd.; 410-435-2700).

Roland Park Wine & Liquor – Not as large as the previous two, Roland Park Wine & Liquor does offer online ordering. However, it’s best to visit in person. Chatting with their knowledgeable staff about a fine wine or spirit can be almost as entertaining as drinking it. Check out the excellent selection of full-bodied red wines at reasonable prices (4032 Roland Ave.; 410-366-1676).

Specialty Shops:

Spirits of Mt. Vernon – This handsome wine and liquor store in the heart of Mt. Vernon features a daily changing inventory. You can score a great bottle of wine or unusual fifth of Scotch by just stopping in and visiting with Boris and the delightful staff. Looking for  a gift for a friend or to take to a party? Spirits of Mt. Vernon is an invaluable resource (900 North Charles St.; 410-727-7270).

Mt. Washington Wine Company – With a full complement of hand-picked wines and top-shelf liquors, highly personalized service, and frequent in-store tastings, Mt. Washington Wine Company is, itself, top-shelf. They can build you a nice case of wine for as little as $89 or find you one of the finest vintage Ports (1340 Smith Ave.; 410-435-7410).

Quarry Wine & Spirits – A fairly new business, Quarry Wine & Spirits hasn’t yet received the buzz that old-line stores get. But, that’s about to quickly change. The store is a gem in every way. Their four-part class, Wine 101, is chock full of information and fun. Check out their monthly wine deal, six for $60, or visit their website, it’s the best in the business (2516 Quarry Lake Dr.; 410-486-9463).
