Closings: 5 Bars to Bid Farewell in Baltimore
Summer has brought a slew of disappointing news to drink-lovers in Baltimore. Local watering holes The Americana, Geckos, Shuckers, Red House Tavern, and Yellow Dog Tavern either will be closing or have already closed their doors. Raise your glass in memory of these great hangouts, and cross your fingers for some fantastic new bars in the city as the year progresses.
The Americana in Canton, owned by Marine Corps veteran Alex van Breukelen, has posted they will be closing their doors mid July, because Alex has decided to re-enter the United States Marine Corps. A long list of farewell events are planned, including a Kick the Keg Party on July 19.
One of Canton’s gems has shuttered after 15 years of operation. The owners of Geckos plan to retire after a wonderful run, much to the disappointment of the area locals. The owners of James Joyce have reportedly purchased the location, but future plans are still unknown.
Yellow Dog Tavern, an off-the-square bar in Canton, has also informed patrons they will be closing down slowly over the next few weeks. No official information has been released.
Open since 2005, Shuckers in Fells Point has ended its run after the owners decided not to renew the lease this summer. This seafood restaurant had prime a waterfront location on Thames Street. No information has been released as to what will replace the restaurant.
Red House Tavern officially closed on July 4, according to the bar's Twitter account. Owner Rob Singer is reportedly looking to put more time into his other bar, Leon’s. He has yet to decide what to do with the building on Essex.
