Where to Find the Best Tiki Cocktails in Baltimore
The steamiest days of summer are upon us in Baltimore, so what better way to cool off than with some tropical, tiki-style cocktails? Around town, Baltimore bars are mixing up some cold and sweet summer drinks to sip poolside, harborside, or just bar-side.
Woody’s Rum Bar: Where else would you expect to find some of the top tiki drinks in Charm City other than its most well known rum bar? Specializing in Caribbean flavors, Woody’s is known for their Painkillers. A mixture of dark rum, pineapple and orange juices and cream of coconut, this dangerously tasty drink will transport you from the stunning second floor waterfront view in Fell’s Point to the islands. Bo Brooks: This waterfront crab house is known for their delicious hard shells, but the cocktail menu is definitely another draw for Canton mainstay. There are multiple tropical drinks that we might recommend, but the cocktail that most screams “Tiki!” to us is the Rum Punch. This fruity blend of juices and three types of rum is sure to satisfy that island beverage craving, particularly if you are lucky enough to get a seat at the outdoor tiki hut. Waterfront Kitchen: This classy restaurant and bar on the edge of Fell’s Point boasts some fine kitchen creations, but with a drink program overseen by renowned expert Chef Jerry Pellegrino, the beverages aren’t to be missed. Rest at their cozy bar or grab a table on their outdoor deck with one of the best water views in Baltimore while you sip a perfect Pomelocioso. With a white rum base, this cocktail also combines grapefruit, blood orange, mint and thyme and is finished with a splash of lemon lime soda. It’s a great companion to a mid-day brunch, or to have as a refreshing sunset sip. (1417 Thames Street; 410-681-5310)
Bond Street Social: Bond Street Social is where the cool kids in Baltimore (of drinking age, naturally) hang out, and after a look at the drink menu, we can see why. While their Liquid Nitrogen Martinis are a unique offering in the city, we are a little partial to drinks like the Grilled Pineapple Mojito when it comes to island-style sipping. Malibu Pineapple Rum is combined with grilled pineapple puree, simple syrup, lime juice, mint and sprite. This luscious libation has all of the layered flavors of a perfect tiki drink with welcome innovation, too. (901 South Bond St.; 443-449-6234)
Ra Sushi: We will admit that we were surprised, too, to find tiki tipples at an upscale sushi joint in Baltimore. However, the mixologists at Ra are apparently just as creative as their artistic sushi chefs, and the Coco Loco shows just that. Proving that not all tiki-style drinks must incorporate rum, the Coco Loco mixes pineapple and coconut vodkas with pineapple juice and creamy coconut colada. Stick with the original recipe, or request the mango or strawberry for an extra twist. (1390 Lancaster St.; 410-522-3200)
Tiki Barge: No list of tiki drinks in Charm City would be complete without, of course, an inclusion of the Tiki Barge. This on-the-water bar is the place to enjoy cold beverages waterside in the warm months. Naturally, there are countless possibilities for tropical-style cocktails here, but why not enjoy their signature cocktail, the Tiki Torch? Fresh juices mingle with Malibu Rum in this sunrise colored beauty of a beverage. This may be as close as you get to the islands this summer, but with a few of these under your belt during a warm, breezy happy hour on the harbor, we’re pretty sure you’ll be just fine with that.
