National Margarita Day falls on
Monday, February 22, this year, but we think the first day of every week is probably worthy of being Margarita Monday. After all, what erases the painful start of a full work-week better than a touch of tequila? Here are a few of our known favorites mixed in with some newer additions. Did we miss your favorite marg? With over 130 tequila selections in stock, Blue Agave is a no-brainer destination for margaritas. Choose from 10 variations on the cocktail menu that range from traditional to a skinny version to some that incorporate sweeter flavors like pomegranate, mango, and pear to spicier styles featuring flavors like red pepper or 3 chile-infused tequila. If you need further proof that there’s no bad time for a margarita, Blue Agave offers happy hour every day of the week. (1032 Light St.; 410-576-3938)
This casual, popular taco spot has spent a successful 11 years in their Harbor East location (in addition to the 25 years they’ve been open in College Park). We’re thinking 2-for-1 margaritas on Sundays may have played a little part in their popularity since the only thing better than one margarita is two, of course. Fresh ingredients are always in use at Taco Fiesta, especially when it comes to beverages. And while we’re never not in the mood for a typical on-the-rocks-with-salt rendition, we also enjoy having options - like the frozen Blood Orange Margarita. (618 S Exeter St.; 410-234-3782)
Situated in the Horseshoe Casino, Johnny Sanchez is a collaboration between celebrity chefs John Besh and Aaron Sanchez. Could there be a better way to kick off a night of gambling at the Horse than with a margarita from the restaurant created by this winning chef combination? If you’re looking for an innovative twist on the traditional, try the Margarita de Jamaica with Olmeca Altos Blanco tequila, sweet hibiscus purée, lime, lemon, and agave. (1525 Russell St.; 443-931-4575)
All of the margaritas at this Fed Hill taco and tequila joint are made from fresh ingredients, but we particularly love the Jalapeno Margarita. Refreshing and cool to start, followed by a brilliant bit of heat, this is one of the best spiced up margaritas in town. (1118 S Charles St.; 443-835-1517)
No list of margaritas in Baltimore would be complete without the addition of Nacho Mama’s Hubcap Margarita (pictured above). This is exactly what it sounds like - a hubcap filled with liquid goodness and straws for all involved. Drinking alone? Enjoy their singular margaritas for only $5 during happy hour, Monday through Friday from 4–7 PM. (2907 O’Donnell St.; 410-675-0898)
Just off of Broadway in the heart of Fell’s Point, the constant crowds at Papi’s have proven that the space itself is not cursed despite what the repeated failures of its predecessors seemed to suggest. The bar and dining room are routinely full of diners and drinkers noshing on top-notch tacos and sipping cerveza, and the outdoor tables are equally as packed in the warmer months. The casual spot is a perfect place for Margarita Mondays, with the drink clocking in at their happy hour price of $4 for the entire day. (1703 Aliceanna St.; 410-299-8480)
The menu at this Venezuelan-inspired spot has already been praised in multiple publications since it opened in Canton’s Can Company last year and the cocktail program is equally impressive. We’ve particularly enjoyed their brunch offerings (Papa Hemingway is a must-try), but who could pass up pairing the popular arepas with Alma’s margarita, a combination of Suerte Blanco, fresh-squeezed lemon and lime juice, agave nectar, and an orange liqueur float? (2400 Boston St.; 667-212-4273)
Clavel, one of the newest additions to Remington, serves Sinaloan cuisine in a comfortable, communal atmosphere and creates cocktails with ingredients behind the bar that are just as fresh and house-made as those in the kitchen. Stick with a traditional margarita to wash back those tacos, or go for a smokier version and order the mezcalita. (225 W 23rd St.; 443-900-8983)
For those who happen to be south of the city, one of Annapolis’ newest spots, Vida Taco Bar, is the place to stop for margaritas to accompany the “farm to taco” dining concept. The VIDA margarita features El Jimador 100% Blue Weber Agave Silver Tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice, valencia orange juice, organic herradura agave, and organic sugar cane. Another option, The Tommy (pictured above article), is created using El Jimador Silver, orange liqueur, lime juice, blood oranges, serrano peppers, organic herradura agave, and organic sugar cane. There is no wrong choice here. (200 Main St., Annapolis; 443-837-6521)
