Possessing a bit of an infatuation with both whiskey and pickle juice, we immediately fell in love with
Fork & Wrench’s creative version of the pickleback several years ago in Baltimore. Consisting of a shot of whiskey and a childhood-style freeze pop of frozen pickle juice (from local Tanner’s Pickles), the novelty created by then-Bar Manager
Shana Leachman gained quick local popularity.
Over time, the popularity spread a bit further - Shana moved to LA just over a year or two ago, but while there she got a call from a friend in NY, exclaiming that her hit spin on a classic in Charm City was being talked about in the Big Apple. Inspired by that, Leachman decided to pop (pun intended) into her own production of cocktail concoctions, creating the company
Savory ‘Sicles.
“Savory ‘Sicles are ice pop cocktail mixers that pair with alcoholic beverages,” Leachman explains. “They are packaged in a plastic pouch that you freeze. You cut the end off the pouch to open, just like the old school freeze pops you had as a kid. Once opened you pair the pop with a shot of your preferred spirit. This can be done by dropping the pop into the shot, then stirring it into the shot. This will 1: chill the shot, and 2: flavor the shot, like an instant cocktail. Savory ‘Sicles can be enjoyed as a fun shot chaser as well.”
Savory ‘Sicles currently offers three flavors, including the original Pickle with pickle juice sourced from Kruegermann Pickles, the Mule with lime and ginger (sourced from Seabold out of Culver City), and a spicy tomato Bloody Mary.
Leachman is also in the process of developing a pina colada pop and is intending to continue developing recipes with some on the sweet side like a “Tiki” pop, with others that are more savory like a dirty martini style.
Staying creative, and open to ideas, Leachman says, “I am also able to make custom pops. For company events, or if a bar wants a custom pop for their establishment, I can work with customers to develop a perfect pop for their needs.”
