Here's Where You'll Be Celebrating National Rye Month in Baltimore
Brown liquor is often associated with cooler temps and fireside imbibing, but Rye Month just happens to fall in August. Instead of considering the happenstance to be ironic, we consider the timing a perfect opportunity to escape the fiery outdoor weather and hunker down in a cool bar with some of Baltimore’s best options for imbibing rye.
Blue Pit BBQ
This laid-back Hampden BBQ spot sports an impressive selection of brown liquor with over 100 varieties of whiskey, 40 of them rye. Choose any of them to incorporate into a classic cocktail, or sip from their signature drink list. (1601 Union Ave, 443-948-5590)
While the cocktail menu at this Canton corner bar is lengthy, we love that longtime bartender Jay Calvert enjoys getting creative, crafting custom cocktails with unique liquors. Pair Calvert’s creativity with any of the range of rye whiskeys that Fork & Wrench has on hand for a cocktail worth a toast to the month. (2322 Boston St, 443-759-9360)
With a dozen and a half rye whiskeys, this cozy corner spot on the edge of Fells Point is an affordable option for sipping rye on its own or in one of several house cocktails. (1900 Aliceanna St, 410-327-0303)
Popping in to this Thames Street spot during Rye Month is a no-brainer. With the spirit as its namesake, and a cocktail program overseen by accomplished local Perez Klebahn, this Prohibition-period style bar is the place to celebrate the month. (1639 Thames St, 443-438-3296)
R. Bar at R. House
The focal point in the center of Remington’s innovative food hall, R. Bar, is headed by local talents Aaron Joseph and Amie Ward. Expect not only creativity in cocktails, but to learn a bit too, if you choose. (301 W 29th St, 443-347-3570)
The Cannon Room at Sagamore Pendry
This upscale space in the new Sagamore Pendry Hotel in Fells Point focuses on both bourbon and rye. Featuring an array of options, including locally crafted Sagamore Rye, sip a classic cocktail or one of their originals. (1715 Thames St, 443-552-1300)
