Head to These Baltimore Bars for National Rum Day, August 16
Rum punches, daiquiris, and mojitos are summer encapsulated in a glass, but even straight rum can be a refreshing brown liquor summer sip. What better way is there to celebrate National Rum Day, which is on August 16, than sipping on the summer spirit at these spots known for their selections?
Alma Cocina Latina
The Canton Can Company may appear at a glance to look a bit like a version of a small suburban strip mall, but Alma Cocina Latina proves it is anything but standard. This Venezuelan-inspired spot sporting an arepa bar and open, comfortable dining area served us one of our favorite drinks of the year last fall - a rum-based old-fashioned. Their menu features a wide variety of other rum cocktails worth checking out. (2400 Boston St, 667-212-4273)
What well-respecting pirate themed establishment wouldn’t keep a fine selection of rum on hand? Typically, Heavy Seas’ pirate theme extends primarily to their beers, but of course they have a fine selection of rum as well. Drink it neat, on the rocks, or check out their cocktails which often creatively feature their brews as well. (1300 Bank St.; 410-753-1403)
Who would have guessed that one of the city’s most revered pizza spots is also a top-notch rum destination, too? Round out your square pizza with a few rum cocktails, or sip straight from their wide selection. (33 W North Ave, 410-545-0444)
If anyone in Baltimore knows about rum, it’s Aaron Joseph who is at the helm at R. Bar. Get some education and taste it straight, or let him shake or stir a memorable cocktail or two (or an immemorable three or four… no judgment, here). (301 W 29th St, 443-347-3570)
The seats at this all-window second story bar in Fells Point are in demand for good reason, with one of the best water (and street) views in a casual spot. There are plenty of rum cocktail options, but we never visit the spot without downing a Painkiller. (821 S Broadway, 410-563-6800)
