2011 Super Bowl Beer Commercials

Even if you aren’t a sports fan, it’s likely that you watch the Super Bowl for the infamous commercials aired, and for those of you working off your hangovers we hope you don’t remember the half time show.

The Super Bowl is easily the most watched American sporting event of the year. Just how many viewers? While figures haven’t been released yet, it is estimated that last night's victory by Green Bay will have the highest ratings ever for a Super Bowl, and will beat last year's record of 106 million viewers. According to the Nielson Co., the Super Bowl was on more than 2/3rds of American televisions being watched last night.

We all know the big game is also the holy grail of advertising slots. With a Super Bowl that was most likely the most watched in history, just how much do companies pay for their commercials? High tech production aside (I‘m talking about you, over the top Coca-Cola commercial), Fox charged an average of 3 million dollars per 30 seconds of air time.

The commercials this year were primarily dominated by car companies and over the top computer generated graphics. Not all were bad though, and after waiting 23 years since the debut of the famous TV show, we finally got to see Roseanne get floored by a giant tree in a Snickers commercial.

This year was a change of pace from the usual beer dominated advertising, and we didn‘t see much of the famous Clydesdales trampling tasteless beer ads down our gullets. Most accurate commercial of the year goes to Bud Light with their product placement theme. The 30 second commercial acts as a perfect metaphor for macro beer companies, proving further that 99% of the time they worry about advertising and less about important things, like taste.

Football fans should get used to Bud’s campaigns, though, as it appears Anheuser-Busch InBev has locked up all the spots for Super Bowl alcohol advertisements until 2014. The only other beer commercial we saw this year featured Adrien Brody serenading a crowd of captivated women for Stella Artois.

What were the best 2011 Super Bowl commercials? That’s up to you to decide. Though some train wrecks include Joan Rivers as a GoDaddy girl, Ozzy managing to stand up long enough to be filmed with Justin Bieber, and a brigade of tasteless Groupon commercials.

With over 60 that aired, it appears fan favorite for this year is the VW commercial featuring a child Darth Vader, who despairingly uses the force to will over common household items and pets, until getting a little help from Dad in the form of remote starting his new Volkswagon.
