Bar Review: Bond Street Social
Bond Street Social is a beautiful venue. Situated right on the water in historic Fells Point (at the corner of Thames & Bond) it offers breathtaking views of the harbor and as well as windows facing the cobbled street outside. The former DuClaw Brewing Company outpost has been newly done up. The interior boasts five fireplaces, two huge bars with flat screen TVs and a smattering of tables dotting the room. Including outdoors, there is seating for nearly 160.
The beverage program is robust: teeming with a good variety of wine, both domestic and international beers on tap & bottled, as well as "social drinks" – available in 80-oz. jars for the whole table – ranging from liquid nitrogen martinis to fruit infused cocktails. The Argentinian Malbec ($8/$30) was especially pleasing with the duck spring rolls ($9) and pulled pork arepas ($9). For research purposes (of course) a cucumber martini ($14) was ordered to go with the sumptuous Bond Street Burger Sliders ($11, add foie gras butter for $2 extra). From the social drinks menu, a grilled pineapple mojito ($10) was ordered. Though the cocktail itself wasn't overly impressive, it went very well with the rock shrimp tacos ($9).
Service was good, the bartenders pleasant, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Small plates came out as they were made, drinks were shaken & stirred. Some of the liquid nitrogen tricks used to make the cocktails seemed unncessary, but that can be forgiven in light of the enjoyable eats and pairings. The ambience, depending on where the eye went, moved from boisterous sports zone to rustic romantic moments to a laid back lounge. Happy hour runs from 4–7 PM weekdays, with $4 beers, $5 wines, and $6 cocktails.
